UNM hires former Notre Dame football coach UPDATE: Hiring confirmed:

Multiple sources are reporting that UNM athletic director Paul Krebs has hired former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie as the school’s new football coach.

Here’s what ESPN reporter Joe Schad put on his Twitter feed:

No confirmation from UNM.

Davie coached the Fighting Irish from 1997-2001 and racked up a 35-25 record — more wins than losses but not enough to satisfy folks in South Bend, Indiana. Since that time, Davie has been a color commentator for ESPN coverage of college football.

I thought Davie kind of got the shaft at Notre Dame so I wish him luck in Albuquerque. Not having coached in 10 years may give one pause but after winning just three games in the last three seasons, there’s nowhere for the Lobos to go but up.

I wonder how much he’ll get paid.

Update 12:29 p.m. The Albuquerque Journal reports that Krebs has confirmed hiring Davie. A news conference is set for Thursday (Nov. 17).
