Even though Albuquerque and New Mexico enjoy few professional-level sports programs, 2011 provided plenty to talk about.

University of New Mexico football provided, perhaps, the most discussed sports story of the year with the hiring of former University of Notre Dame head football coach Bob Davie to head its troubled football program. Dwindling ticket sales and a 2-26 record over two seasons led to the firing of head coach Mike Locksley.
